Overview of the situation

The United Republic of Tanzania’s Ministry of Health confirmed the end of the country’s first known Marburg virus disease (MVD) epidemic on June 2, 2023. Nine cases in all (eight laboratory-confirmed and one suspected) were recorded between March 21 and May 31. All instances were recorded from the Kagera region’s Bukoba district. Six fatalities were reported overall (case fatality ratio: 67%) during the epidemic.

The declaration was made 42 days (twice the maximum incubation time for Marburg virus infection) after the last likely exposure to an MVD probable or confirmed, in compliance with WHO criteria.
